AdBlue In Your Diesel

All over West Yorkshire we are encountering a growing number of examples of AdBlue contamination where someone has poured AdBlue right into their diesel fuel tank. This is in part a result of drivers not understanding the right way to work with it (pay attention: it is in fact not a fuel additive), and to some extent because the inlets for diesel and AdBlue are normally directly near to each other on the car.

So, what is the issue with putting AdBlue in a diesel tank? Because the product is predominantly deionised water, it is actually almost the same as putting water in to your tank. Diesel and water don't blend whatsoever and trying to run a diesel car on water will not work. Moreover, the urea is highly corrosive to fuel system pipes and seals and is susceptible to crystallisation, blocking injectors and fuel filters.

If you find you have put AdBlue into a fuel tank get it out asap. And most certainly never start up the motor - not even to shift it from the pump. In cases where you have started the vehicle you may probably need to have the whole fuel system flushed and filters changed.

Water contaminated fuel

Fuel contaminated with water, whether it is unleaded or diesel, can be a serious matter to deal with in a motor vehicle - specifically in present-day common-rail engines. Water inside your diesel or petrol may well cause idling issues, lumpy running, increased smoke and, if it's not sorted out properly, possibly ruined injectors. Having water in petrol is quicker to drain than water in diesel - this is mostly due to the fact that diesel is an oil. Even so we can handle both situations rather easily.

Be aware though that in the event that the vehicle was run on the water contaminated fuel it will most likely require a new fuel filter to be fitted seeing as the old one will be wholly water-logged and useless.
